Fracture Classification · Basic

A 7-year-old falls on an outstretched hand. X-ray shows a fracture through the growth plate extending into the metaphysis. Which Salter-Harris type is this?

Answer: Type II — fracture through the physis exiting through the metaphysis (the most common type, ~75% of physeal injuries). The metaphyseal fragment is the classic "Thurston-Holland fragment."
